In search of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights, my travelling companions & I made our way to Reykjavik, Iceland.
To ensure we allowed sufficient time to see the Northern Lights we pre-booked a tour for the night we arrived.
We were very lucky that our group of 6 had a 4WD tour all to ourselves, and our guide knew an excellent location where we were on our own away from crowds to gaze on the skies and wait for the lights to dance before us. Not too long after we got set up the cloud-like waves appeared and put on a spectacular show for the next hour or so.
It was freezing out there, but we didn't mind. We had managed to tick off one of our bucket list items!! It was an awesome experience, one we'll all remember for years to come.
The following day we did a full-day Golden Circle Tour. The landscape is amazing & the tour was well run. We enjoyed the sights of Gullfoss waterfall, the Giant Geyser, Thingvellir National Park with its stark landscapes including Almannagjá (All Man’s Gorge) & Lögberg (Law Rock), and on the way back the volcanic crater lake Kerið. Lunch was served at Friðheimar, where you can witness tomatoes grown under artificial lights in giant greenhouses, and then enjoy some freshly made tomato soup & bread, together with a well-deserved glass of wine!
We have promised that we will return to Iceland so that we can travel further afield. There is so much to see!
