Beautiful Alaska

On our Alaska & the Inside Passage cruise holiday, we made the most of the shore excursions at each port of call.

In Juneau, we spent a day sightseeing at the Mendenhall Glacier, followed by whale watching in Auke Bay.

We took a seaplane over the Misty Fjords and a catamaran back to Ketchikan from the upper reaches. This gave us the opportunity to see over the vastness of the countryside as well as get up close to nature, with sightings of Orcas adding to the overall experience.

While we were a little early in the cruise season to see many whales or bears, we were lucky enough to see the upper reaches of the Tormented Valley in northern British Columbia while it was still covered in snow. We spent the day snowshoeing through some stunning scenery.

This is one of the most memorable holidays I have had and ticks off another bucket list item. Having said that, it's on my list to return one day, so I can see even more of this beautiful place.

Here are 5 of my favourite memories from this trip

Stunning Glacier Bay
We had a perfectly still day for watching, listening & being awe-inspired from our ship as it floated around this awesome location.

The Misty Fjords

After we bid farewell to the seaplane that had just flown us over the great expanse of the Misty Fjords in the Tongass National Forest, we boarded a catamaran to take us back through the Behm Canal, passing by Punchbowl Cove and New Eddystone Rock, to Ketchikan.

Juneau Nature Watching
The best thing to do in Juneau is to spend time with nature. Start the day with a walk along the photo point trail near the Mendenhall Glacier visitors centre and marvel at the terminal of the Glacier. From here, head to where you board a whale spotting vessel and enjoy time watching these magnificent marine mammals. You will no doubt spot the sea lions as they laze around nonchalantly on the buoys.

The White Pass and Yukon Route Railway
This is a rail adventure worth taking. Built during the Klondike Gold Rush, this railway takes you on a journey through an amazing panorama of mountains, glaciers & gorges.

Awesome Snowshoeing Adventure
This is one of the most memorable experiences of our entire Alaskan holiday. We caught a bus up to Fraser in British Columbia, where we then boarded the train to our drop-off location in the upper reaches of the Tormented Valley. From here, we commenced our snowshoeing adventure through some of the most incredible, beautiful terrain. Words can't express the experience. The photos come close, but to actually be there was something else!
