The Canal du Midi

A few years ago now, my family and I (10 of us in total) spent about 12 weeks travelling around France.

Part of our trip was a 2 week canal cruise aboard a self driven Penichette through Locaboat. We set off from a little ecluse (lock) in the South of France called Negra, about 30km from Toulouse, on "La Maguelonne" and meandered down the Canal du Midi all the way to the port of Lattes (Montpellier).

We had 6 adults and 4 kids on board, and although there wasn't much room on the boat we were able to pull up alongside the canal wherever we wanted and get off to stretch our legs, or walk or ride to the next lock. It was such a great, relaxing way to see the French countryside at our own pace, and sample some delicious food and wine along the way.

If you ever get the chance to cruise along the Canal du Midi, whether you drive yourself or take a luxury barge, I'd most definitely say do it! And if I can assist you with this, please get in touch

10 years on and our family still talk about the cruise we did and the fun we had, and we often dream of doing another.
