To Club Med, or Not?

To Club Med, or Not?

For years I have been encouraged and cajoled to add Japan to my snowboard repertoire, but in all honesty, it was something that never called to me. I was so in love with Canada and its majestic mountains, that I felt nothing could compare.

Now before we get into my thoughts and experiences, I need to preface this with the fact that I was invited along to Club Med so I could see firsthand what a holiday would be like at their resorts of Tomamu and Sahoro Hokkaido, and I thank Club Med for the experience.

So, what did I think?

It is important to understand where I am coming from. Having been snowboarding for almost 30 years, I have a love for mountains and exciting challenging terrain, but also, I like things to be easy. I am not one for lugging my gear up a hill each day, especially if I have the kids with me, and roughing it is definitely no longer my thing.

My family has travelled to many ski resorts over the years, so as a mum I know exactly what I am looking for to make the holiday an exceptional experience for everyone in the family. I don’t like stress, or surprises that cause stress. This is my holiday too!

Let’s talk about Club Med Tomamu. This is approximately a 1.5-hour trip from Chitose Airport, so definitely not an onerous drive.  We were delivered directly to the resort door, and all our bags were looked after without having to lift a finger (win!).  Check-in is a little different to normal hotels, as you take a seat, enjoy a warm towel and tea whilst listening to your G.O. explain how things work, from where to find lunch, when your bags will arrive to your room, and how your key (bracelet) works.

Fun on the Club Med Tomamu SlopesWe find our rooms and are delighted. They are spacious and beautifully appointed, although I may need a lesson in how to use the toilet! Club Med has rooms for all shapes and sizes of families with guaranteed interconnecting options and suites as well. And to ensure your holiday is relaxing, the rooms are serviced daily, so a true vacation from making your own bed!

Oh, the food… I swear every holiday I take is about unlimited food offerings! Tomamu had the most splendid display of food from all different cultures. Each day was a delight to arrive to see what chefs have devised and each time someone returned to our table with a dish, it raised questions as to where it could be found.

Although there are set times for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, they are generous and work well with the ski lessons. Guaranteed you  will never go hungry, with hot and cold  snacks provided most of the day in the main bar area as well

Now let’s talk Piste!  So Tomamu terrain is on the smallish side. For my readers that are more on the advanced side, then this resort is not the one that is going to challenge you. It lends itself more to the beginners and intermediates of your family - a great place to start the kids off on their learning path. Club Med Ski lessons are included with your stay at all levels and it is worthwhile taking advantage of this, even at the highest levels, as the instructors tend to have some hidden favourites.

Now what about off the slopes? At the end of the day, you can head to the Wave Pool for some splash action and for those looking for a more cultural experience, head to the Onsen. This all can be found a short walk from Club Med.

Within Club Med itself, there are lots of activities to do, and it is merely a quick check on the App to see what is on offer, or if relaxing is more your thing, then head to the bar/lounge area to indulge in fabulous cocktails!

So, my verdict?

Club Med is a one-stop shop. Your package includes beautiful accommodation, all your meals and drinks (yes, cocktails too!), ski lessons and lift pass. Rentals can be pre purchased as well prior to travel. For those bringing their own gear, you can have your skis and boards waxed while waiting, (complimentary). I love that there are no surprises upon checkout. No hefty drink or activities bill. For a family holiday, it makes great sense. Definitely a no-stress ski holiday.

Things for a parent to love?? Beds are made, meals, activities and logistics are taken care of, and kids are outdoors having fun.

All that is left for you to do, is enjoy the time with your family!
