For a die-hard snowboarder who never misses a season, it is quite a conundrum.
So, what am I thinking?
Purchasing a season pass is a bit like a game of roulette. You could land on your number and have a bumper season, or you could bet the house and come up with nothing.
The things we know…..
To have a good season, the higher the altitude of the resort, the better conditions. Interestingly, this would be Turoa and Whakapapa on Mt Ruapehu, followed by Thredbo and Perisher.
The early part of the season is experiencing a gradual decline in snow depth, which means it is best to stick to the core part of the season, which, unfortunately, is the most expensive.
Snowmaking helps when the weather permits, so resorts that have this ability will be a far better choice.
Ski Holidays are invariably inflexible and require payment upfront.
So where does that leave your decision on ski holidays?
Looking at New Zealand, the winning component is that should the season not go so well, all is not lost, and a fabulous holiday can still be had!
There are so many activities, and sights to explore and experience on and off the slopes.
Let’s talk Queenstown.
This is the base for The Remarkables and Coronet Peak. One pass and you get both ski resorts.
But off snow, there is so much to do, and with the NZ SuperPass, you can trade in a day’s skiing for credit towards local activities and dining.
Most known is AJ Hackett Bungy experiences, where you can jump and dangle at Skippers Canyon or The Ledge. For those with the need for speed, the Shot over Jet will always thrill.
My personal favourite is the Kea 6 Line Zip Trek Experience, where you fly between the treetops whilst taking in the views of Queenstown. And when that is done, test your racing skills with a few hot laps on a go-kart before a sumptuous buffet dinner overlooking the lights of Queenstown.
For the more adventurous, the Hydro attack experience is sure to get the adrenaline pumping. Reach speeds up to 80kph before diving underwater. Think Torpedo meets fighter jet! And for the not so faint-hearted follow this with a hair-raising experience in the Fear Factory!
A calmer and more cultural experience will have you cruising back in time aboard the TSS Earnslaw steamship across the lake to enjoy a Local farm experience.
So my hot tip for Ski Season?
Choose a destination that will offer you lots of action on and off the slopes as well.
