Have you heard of the Shetland Islands?
If so, is it from watching the TV Series?
Firstly the majority of the filming is done on the Scottish mainland. Jimmy Perez only walks through the door of his infamous house. Same with the Police Station.
So…….. Is there a lot more to the Shetland Islands than the TV show promotes?
You bet there is.
Shetland has a rich Viking history (Shetland is closer to Norway than Edinburgh). Mixed with the power-based Scottish hierarchical history, it's all very fascinating.
Then there are some of the most stunning coastlines we have ever seen. Complimented by rolling hills, marinas, beaches, Croft ruins, church ruins and graveyards. Even more fascinating.
We organised 2 full-day tours with a retired Doctor and chose to go to the northwest mainland on the first one and the northernmost point on the island of Unst on the second day.
David is a passionate Scotsman who moved to Shetland 30 years ago but is still not considered a Shetlander!
It’s all in the way you speak he tells us.
In saying that we found the people to be extremely welcoming and friendly.
His knowledge of the history, geology, flora and bird life is incredible. He loves Shetland and describes it with passion and respect.
We chose to stay in Lerwick to see Jimmy’s house. We weren't disappointed.
The harbour Main Street is characterful, and Lerwick is very walkable.
There is a lovely walk along the coast, taking you to a restaurant on the water and Tescos for supplies.
So many people travel to different parts of the UK, never considering The Shetland Islands.
I would thoroughly urge you to give thought to including them on your next trip to the UK or Scandinavia.
Fairly sure you wouldn’t be sorry.
