Valletta, Malta

The first question I hear is ‘Where’s that.’

Valletta is the capital of Malta, an island a short distance from both Sicily and the Italian mainland.

Malta has been ruled by many different countries due to its strategic position. Its buildings and language, among other things, reflect this.

There is still a strong Islamic presence dating back to the trade days.

The old capital is Medina, well worth a visit. They call it the silent city. It is mainly residential, with few cars and although a tourist destination, has by and large maintained its identity.

The modern capital, Valletta has an incredibly characterful old town.

It is very undulating with steep stairs every way you look and you are never too far from the sea.

There are quality restaurants scattered everywhere providing a variety of cuisines.

It is characterised by its colourful painted balconies.

Marsaxlokk market is a must, especially on a busy Sunday.

Colourful, aromatic and a great place to join the locals.

Traditionally a fish market, it now sells almost everything.

Delightful, colourful fishing boats give the market an extra ambience,

All such fun!

Traditional food

Sliema is the high-rise modern bit across the water from Valletta, but old town remnants are not too far back behind them.

We had the most fantastic food in a traditional restaurant and only a couple of streets back behind the talls.

A coastal boat tour is very worthwhile for perspective and to gain some knowledge of the history.

A ferry takes you across from Valletta to Sliema (about 10 minutes) & the tour boats leave from there.

We were fortunate enough to have accommodation with a terraza which had a 180-degree view across the harbour & inlets.

The cruise ships went past as if they belonged to the waterway.

Fishing boats of all sizes constantly moved through these waterways.

We loved our visit to Malta.

It’s a ferry or plane ride from Sicily, or a 1.5 hour flight from Rome, & adds a little more diversity to your trip & some more delicious food to your belly.

It is also very easy to build into an Italian or European Holiday.

Keep it in mind.
