7 Tips for Keeping Your Passport Safe When Travelling

Keeping your passport safe when travelling is crucial as it is one of the most important documents you will carry with you.

Here are our tips and suggestions for keeping your passport safe while you're travelling.

1. If you need to take your passport out with you:

Keep it on your person at all times and not in a bag. Especially in public places where it can be easily stolen.

2. Use a passport holder.

A passport holder is a great way to keep your passport safe and organised. It will also help protect your passport from damage. Damaged passports can make you inelgible to travel and you can be denied boarding.

3. Make a photocopy of your passport.

Make a photocopy of your passport and keep it in a safe place, separate from your actual passport. Consider leaving a photocopy with family or friends at home too. This will be useful in case your passport gets lost or stolen.

4. Keep your passport in a hotel safe when you don't need it.

Most hotels have a safe in the room or at the front desk where you can store your passport. Be sure to get a receipt for the safe deposit.

5. Be aware of your surroundings.

Always be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour. If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, trust your instincts and leave the area.

6. Use a money belt.

A money belt is a good option for keeping your passport, money, and other important documents close to your body and safe from theft or loss.

7. Be careful with your passport when using it.

When using your passport, be careful not to leave it unattended and don't let anyone else hold it. Be sure to check that you have received your passport back after any formalities.

What to do if something happens to your passport:

It is crucial to report it immediately.

It should be reported to the local police as well as your relevant consulate office.

Contact your travel insurance company after this has been done.

NOTE: Your travel insurance may only cover the costs of a replacement passport if you have a valid police report.
