Being a Canada travel expert, I organise a lot of trips to Canada.
I am often booking my clients on iconic journeys such as the Rocky Mountaineer rail, or on the stunning Canada & Alaska cruises, so the first stop is usually Vancouver. Aussies making their way to Eastern Canada usually fly through Vancouver too, so rather than hop straight onto your connecting flight, why not consider a stopover in Vancouver? There is so much to do and see here that it is worth spending at least a few nights before you head off. Having a rest after a long flight is also a good idea, rather than rushing off straight to the next destination.
I recently visited Vancouver again and want to share my tips and advice for the best way to spend a few days here.
How to get to Vancouver
Getting to Vancouver is easy with Air Canada. It's a great option being a direct flight from Australia and the timings work well, arriving in Vancouver early morning. Other airlines will take you via the USA. Be aware of transit and visa requirements if taking this route and it will add a lot more time to your trip.
Vancouver Accommodation
There are plenty of accommodation styles to suit all budgets in Vancouver, here are three hotel options I'd recommend.
The Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver is a great option if the next part of your holiday is a cruise. Strategically located in Canada Place, which is next to the Cruise Terminal, the hotel offers breathtaking views of the harbour and beautiful rooms and amenities. With thoughtful touches such as 24-hour concierge services, yoga studios and a tranquil spa, it's a perfect option to unwind after your long flight and settle into the new timezone before your cruise or onward journey.
Travel tip: after the long flight, we headed straight to the hotel and had a shower in the Fitness Centre change rooms. Normally, hotel check-in is in the afternoon so this is a great way to refresh when your room isn't ready yet.
The Metropolitan Hotel Vancouver is the accommodation of choice for travellers looking to experience the hustle and bustle of the city centre. I love this location with the Pacific Centre shopping mall across the road and easy access to attractions and dining. The spacious rooms offer modern comforts and contemporary styling. I also highly recommend visiting 'Diva at the Met' even if you aren't staying at the hotel. As a Marriott hotel, the focus is on local, seasonal ingredients, so breakfast here is an experience. Another great option is enjoying the cocktails created by the awesome bartender here. Enjoy one, or three!
The Sheraton Wall Street Hotel Vancouver is the hotel for you if you like to wake up with a view. The breathtaking scenery over Vancouver from the property's two towers are simply magnificent and some of the best views in Vancouver. The central location means it is convenient to get around, shops, restaurants and entertainment options are just steps away.
What to do and see in Vancouver: sights and experiences I recommend
Just below the Pan Pacific is 'Flyover Canada'. This immersive 'ride' has you soaring over Canada with amazing views! Special effects, including wind, mist and scents, combine with the ride’s motion to create an unforgettable experience.
Booking a guided city tour on one of your first days is always a great idea, to help you get your bearings and see some of the highlights on foot. A stop at the A-maze-ing Laughter statues, the Spinning Chandelier and the Gastown Steam Clock are all highlights.
A morning exploring Robson Street is a must-do if you enjoy shopping.
On this trip the Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival was on and I visited Robson Street in search of a special Hot Chocolate!
We did a Foodie Tour, which I highly recommend, with tastings of cheese, bread, salmon, chocolate and more, finishing with coffee and the best donut I've ever had! Granville Island can be reached by bus or by one of the water taxis which operate around Vancouver.
The Capilano Suspension Bridge is another not-to-be-missed highlight. Spanning across a stunning canyon, it holds the record for being the longest and highest suspension foot bridge in Canada. Visitors come from all over the world to experience the thrill of standing 230 feet high above one of Mother Nature's most majestic locations. After crossing the bridge, there is an awesome treetop walk with a real focus on activities for children. Families should definitely add this one to the itinerary.
From October through to March, there are lights around the complex, which really create a magical feel. During December and January, it's the Canyon Lights for Christmas, which I would love to see. It's a great addition to any snow holiday for families ❄️☃️
There is also a clifftop walk, as well as cafes and shopping. It's easy to visit from downtown Vancouver with a shuttle bus that can take you in both directions. I do recommend trying the yummy Poutine here!
Stanley Park is a must-do for everyone going to Vancouver.
There is a seawall around the park that can be used by walkers and cyclists, with the 'story poles' or totems a popular stop. The Brewpub here offers delicious beers and snacks and is a great example of some of the popular Craft Breweries that Canada offers, highly recommend this for beer drinkers.
The nearby Aquarium has super cute sea otters and a great option for families or sea-life enthusiasts. With a rescue and rehabilitation programme, the animals at the aquarium have been injured and can't be released back into the wild.
As a very multicultural city, Vancouver has some fabulous restaurants.
There are also some great foodie tours that will take you around the neighbourhoods, so you get to see all the hidden local favourites and don't need to worry about getting lost. The Dine Out Vancouver Festival was on during my most recent trip, and I really enjoyed the special dinner menu at The Greek by Anatoli.
If you haven't guessed yet, I love food, so my last night in Vancouver was spent doing a dumpling cooking class in Chinatown after a guided tour through the neighbourhood. Chinatown borders some of the sketchier areas of Vancouver, so doing a foodie tour is a great way to explore and learn about the history in a safe way.
The best way to spend your last night in Vancouver has to be experiencing a 'Polar Bear' Hot Chocolate at the iconic Fairmont Hotel. Add it to the itinerary!
I have been lucky enough to visit Canada many times and absolutely love the destination and all it offers. If I can help you plan your dream holiday to Canada, please get in touch!
