The 13th century medieval walled town of Tenby in South West Wales is a haven for tourists from around the world. It features many historical buildings and the renowned Pembrokeshire Coastal Path Walk passes through the town. Nestled along the southwest coast of Wales, Tenby is a charming and colorful coastal town that feels like it's been plucked straight from a postcard. Its stunning sandy beaches, medieval walls, and vibrant buildings create an enchanting atmosphere that's hard to forget. The town's rich history, combined with its lively atmosphere, makes it the perfect destination for families and couples alike. Stroll along the cobbled streets, explore the historic town walls, or take a boat trip to the nearby Caldey Island for a true taste of Tenby's unique beauty where the Cistercian Monks have a history dating back more than a thousand years of living quietly in prayer and tranquility.
Crickhowell: A Gateway to the Black Mountains
Situated at the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Crickhowell is a charming market town that been awarded the "Best High Street in the UK and offers independent local shops to tempt you. Crickhowell has an 18th-century bridge which spans the River Usk and has the unusual characteristic of 13 arches on one side and just 12 on the other. With a length exceeding 128 metres, it proudly holds the distinction of being Wales' longest stone bridge. Additionally, this historic structure holds the esteemed status of a Grade I listed building and is recognized as a Scheduled monument. The Bear Hotel has a rich history which can be traced back to the 15th Century when it served as a Coaching Inn where weary travellers could rest.
Crickhowell serves as a gateway to some of Wales' most breathtaking natural landscapes. The town is surrounded by the Black Mountains, which offer a plethora of hiking and outdoor activities as well as the Green Man Festival held in August each year. The lush green hills, meandering streams, and picturesque villages in the area create a serene backdrop for those looking to reconnect with nature. - my home town so ask me for personal recommendations!
Brecon Beacons National Park: Nature's Playground
The Brecon Beacons (or to give its Welsh name - Bannau Brycheiniog), is located in South Wales. The Brecon Beacons National Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Its rolling hills, lush valleys, and pristine waterfalls provide the perfect setting for hiking, cycling, and stargazing. Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales, is a popular destination for hikers. The park's dark skies also make it an excellent spot for stargazing, and it has even earned an International Dark Sky Reserve status, ensuring unforgettable views of the night sky and occasionally the dazzling Northern Lights.
Llanthony Abbey: A Place of Mystical Beauty
Nestled in a secluded valley in the Black Mountains, Llanthony Abbey is a historic gem that exudes an air of mystique. Founded in the 12th century, the abbey's romantic ruins are a testament to the passage of time. Surrounded by awe-inspiring landscapes, it's the ideal spot for both history buffs and nature lovers. Explore the abbey's remnants and take a walk along the Offa's Dyke Path for breathtaking views of the valley.
The pub within the grounds Llanthony Abbey offers a cosy and historic setting where visitors can enjoy a refreshing drink while taking in the ancient beauty of the abbey's surroundings. Guests can even stay overnight at the historic Llanthony Priory Hotel - an incredible experience!
