Have you ever wondered why K'gari is the Aboriginal word for paradise? After visiting, I can assure you it’s the perfect name for this incredible island.
As the largest sand island in the world, its diverse landscapes left us in awe, showcasing everything from pristine lakes and flowing creeks to dense bushland, lush rainforest, and towering sand dunes.
This unique environment creates a paradise for beach driving, exploring, watching sunsets, fishing and, during Whale migration season, the wonder of whale watching.
Fraser Island is one of the best locations for whale watching, with Southern humpback whales heading to Fraser Island to give birth to their young and staying while nursing them before heading back for the Antarctic summer. We cruised along the calm waters of the bay whilst Mum & bub whales played alongside. If you are feeling extra adventurous, there is even a swim with whales experience.
During this visit, we stayed at Kingfisher Bay Resort, which is convenient to the arriving ferry from Hervey Bay and means you don't require a 4WD, but if you do hire one, it adds to the adventure! Alternatively, there are awesome tours that let you sit back and explore the white beaches and World Heritage wilderness with expert drivers and guides. And when it's time to relax, they offer a pool and a choice of restaurants and bars.
