Chimpanzees are one of our favourite African animals. They are also one of our closest relatives.
Chimp trekking is available in many African countries, but our favourites are:
Tanzania | Gombe or Mahale
Uganda | Kibale or Kyambura Gorge
Rwanda | Nyungwe
Chimp trekking is a strenuous activity and may involve walking through dense forest. It is usually a little easier than gorilla trekking, and can be more interactive as chimps live in larger families than gorillas. This means you often see more of them, including more cute babies running around causing trouble.
Our favourite chimp trekking destination is Jane Goodall's chimp research centre in Gombe, Tanzania. This is a very off-the-beaten-track experience that it is hard to get to, meaning there are few tourists compared to other chimp destinations. Gombe is also on the banks of the second largest fresh-water lake in the world, and is only accessible by boat.
