Unveiling Alaska's Secrets: A Repositioning Cruise Adventure

Ever craved a cruise that transcends the ordinary, transporting you not just to stunning locales but also into a unique travel experience? Look no further than repositioning cruises!

This past April, my husband and I embarked on a 23-day repositioning cruise aboard the Seabourn Odyssey. This wasn't your standard island-hopping vacation. Our journey commenced in the vibrant city of Kobe, Japan, where we delved into the country's rich culture. From there, we explored the charming towns dotting the Japanese coastline, with Hakodate (a personal favourite for its mesmerizing cherry blossoms) holding a special place in our hearts.

As we ventured further north, the landscape transformed dramatically. We traversed the vast expanse of the North Pacific, navigating the majestic Bering Sea and threading through the volcanic chain of the Aleutian Islands. This archipelago, a captivating blend of 14 major and 55 smaller islands, straddles the border between Alaska and Russia. Dutch Harbor, Alaska (Unalaska), famed for its role in the "Deadliest Catch" series, provided another unforgettable stop.

Sea days were a cherished opportunity to unwind. We revelled in the tranquillity, indulging in good books, soaking up the sunshine, and simply reconnecting. However, the true magic unfolded when we reached the hidden gems of Alaska. Klawock, a quaint town we were privileged to be the only cruise ships to visit, showcased a community in transition. Here, we witnessed the commendable shift from a reliance on timber to a burgeoning tourism industry.

Smaller ships allow for incredible wildlife encounters, like this young Bald Eagle.Opting for a smaller ship like the Seabourn Odyssey proved to be a winning decision. It granted us access to these intimate ports, allowing us to experience the true essence of Alaska, far removed from the throngs of passengers on larger vessels.

The wildlife encounters were nothing short of breathtaking. A majestic young Bald Eagle graced the ship with its presence for a whole hour, while whales breached in the distance, a fleeting glimpse rewarded only to the most vigilant photographers. While spotting bears remained on our Alaskan adventure list, the diverse ecosystem left us enthralled.

Advantages of Repositioning Cruises

Repositioning cruises often boast lower passenger counts compared to traditional cruises, plus they frequently come at a more inviting price point. The extended itineraries, incorporating those coveted sea days, may not appeal to everyone, but for those seeking an immersive regional experience, they offer unparalleled bliss. Additionally, the one-way nature eliminates the need for a return flight, a significant benefit for long-distance travellers.
