Secrets of Guatemala

Guatemala will hold a piece of my heart forever! Here are 3 of my special places.

Tikal

One of the most exciting reasons to visit Tikal is that, unlike many other Mayan sites, you can climb several of the temples for an amazing view of the park and the surrounding jungle. The sunrise tour is a must-do! You leave your hotel before the sun rises and hike in the dark (with a guide and torches) through the jungle. Next, you climb the iconic Jaguar Temple and sit in silence listening to the wildlife and birds waking up while you watch the night turn to day from the heights of the temple.  As Tikal is found in the heart of the jungle you will come across all sorts of tropical animal species including spider monkeys, howler monkeys, coatimundis (coatis), scarlet macaws, toucans, parrots, peacocks and if you are very, very lucky even a jaguar.

When planning a visit to Tikal be sure to include a night or two at the quaint little town of Flores. Flores Island is found an hour south of Tikal in Peten. The colourful town of Flores is the ideal base before and after your expeditions to the Mayan world hidden in the jungle of Guatemala.

Antigua

The colonial city of Antigua is a very interesting and colourful place with its cobblestone streets (no high heels – ladies), Spanish architecture and friendly locals dressed in their traditional clothing.   Guatemala is the birthplace of chocolate: the word chocolate comes from the Mayan “Chocol’haa.” So be sure to visit the cacao and chocolate museum (Choco Museo), the chocolate workshop in the centre of the city is so much fun. The best part is you make your own customised chocolate bars. Plus you try different kinds of hot chocolate and tea that you prepare. The guides are very informative and funny, an entertaining couple of hours.

Come for a few days or a couple of weeks and learn Spanish with a local. Antigua is one of the best places you can go to learn Spanish! Whether you’re a complete beginner or you just want to brush up on your Spanish skills. My Spanish teacher, Maria was very patient with me as a beginner.

Tip: if you are thinking of doing some Spanish lessons whilst in Antigua plan them at the beginning of your trip so you can practise during the rest of your travels.

Lake Atitlan

Chill out at one of the many gorgeous hotels, retreats & wellness centres on Lake Atitlán edge, the massive volcanic crater lake surrounded by stunning volcano peaks. From here you can take an authentic cooking class with a local, visit various lakeside towns or the famous Chichicastenango markets for local handicrafts, participate in traditional Mayan ceremonies like the Fire Ceremony and Cacao Ceremony or simply relax on the lake edge and enjoy the spectacular view of the surrounding volcanoes.

My heart has been touched by the beauty and magic of Guatemala.
