Hawaii is a perfect self-drive holiday. We spent 3 days in Honolulu (the island of Oahu), followed by 7 days on Kauai.
For me, Waikiki is like a bigger and more expensive Gold Coast, so If that's what you are after, great! You will love it! We chose to get out and stay on the North Shore of the island. Car hire made it a breeze to get around and explore. The food truck culture, amazing beaches, and spectacular scenery makes it worth getting out beyond the high-rise hotels.
Kauai is a must-visit for nature and outdoor enthusiasts, again car hire is a must, but you can drive from the north to the south in a few hours, so it's very easy to base yourself in one spot for accommodation and explore daily. The Kalalau Trail is in the top 5 hikes in the world in my book and a challenging one. And that applies to getting the permits as well. But the reward at the end makes you feel like you are in the movie "The Beach" without all the crazy stuff!
