For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of New York City without the added stress of driving through Manhattan traffic, I’ve got the perfect plan for you!
Start your journey by hopping on the train from NYC to Poughkeepsie, a scenic and relaxing way to begin your upstate adventure. Once in Poughkeepsie, pick up your hire car—trust me, it's a much less stressful way to ease into road-tripping through this beautiful region.
Onto Hudson Valley, Dutchess County, for me has Dirty Dancing Vibes and Culinary Delights
The Hudson Valley is like stepping into a scene from Dirty Dancing—grand resorts, breathtaking scenery, and, of course, incredible food. A must-visit here is the Culinary Institute of America (CIA)—no, not that CIA, but the one that trains top chefs! Be sure to pre-book an experience because this place is a foodie’s dream.
Speaking of food, make a stop at Farm to Table Bistro, where fresh, organic ingredients come together to create mouthwatering dishes. And while in the area, a visit to Millbrook Vineyards & Winery is essential. Sip on some fine wine while enjoying the picturesque vineyard views—yes, there’s a theme here, and it’s delicious!
Now, if you want something totally unique, check out Trevor Zoo—a zoo located within a school! It’s small but mighty, with a great variety of animals and a wonderful educational mission. Definitely worth a stop. Next on my list (and still on my bucket list) is an open cockpit biplane ride. Imagine soaring over the stunning landscapes of upstate New York in a vintage aircraft! It looks amazing, and I’m determined to check it off my list on my next visit.
For those who know me, you’ll also know I love live music and a good dance. That’s why I fell in love with Touch of Texas in Binghamton—a massive venue with fantastic line dancing, affordable drinks, and top-notch entertainment. Tell them I sent you!
Leaving Binghamton, I am off back to Ithaca: Waterfalls, Wineries and College Town Vibes is this town with a great small-town USA feel.
As you make your way to Ithaca, get ready for waterfalls and wineries—the perfect combo. The area has a vibrant college-town energy, amazing food, and some of the best farmers’ markets around. Nature lovers can explore state parks and Cornell Botanical Gardens, and if you’re visiting in winter, hit the slopes at Greek Peak Mountain Resort.
The Finger Lakes: A Wine Lover’s Paradise
This region holds a special place in my heart—I lived here for a year when I was 18, creating unforgettable memories and lifelong friendships. One of my favourite wineries is Dr Konstantin Frank Winery, offering not just outstanding wines but also breathtaking views.
A day out on the lake is a must! Whether you rent a boat or join a tour, don’t miss a stop at The Olney Place on Keuka Lake—a modern-day general store where you can dock your boat, fuel up, and devour some of the best (and biggest!) sandwiches. Plus, their craft beer tap house has some wild and wonderful brews on offer or if in the car pull in refuel and stock up – remember not to drink and drive, these ones better be to go.
While in the area, visit the Corning Museum of Glass—yes, the home of Corning Ware! You can even take a glassblowing class or experience interactive exhibits. If you’re here during the holiday season, Corning turns into a magical Christmas wonderland.
Nearby, Watkins Glen State Park is a stunning place to explore waterfalls and scenic trails. And if you’re a motorsports fan, time your visit for NASCAR weekend, when the town transforms into a high-octane hub of excitement!

Your trip wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Buffalo.
Make your first stop at Anchor Bar, where Buffalo Wings were born—because what’s a trip to New York without indulging in this American classic?
Buffalo is rich in history and culture, from the Civil War graves at Forest Lawn Cemetery to the antique cars at the Buffalo Transportation Pierce-Arrow Museum. For military history buffs, the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park is a must-see.
And, of course, you can’t visit Buffalo without experiencing Niagara Falls. You’ll get an up-close view of this natural wonder from the American side, a perfect way to end your upstate New York adventure.
