We travelled with friends to the heart of Northern California. Sonoma Wine Country beckons travellers with promises of picturesque vineyards, award-winning wines, and a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Let me share the highlights of travelling to Sonoma Wine Country, so you too can enjoy a sensory and unforgettable experience.
More than just wine, we planned our trip around the Napa Valley Nascar Race, a street circuit and a weekend full of wine, food, rev heads and more.
While it might've been fun to drive the rolling hills with the top down on my convertible Mustang, the reality is the luggage wouldn't fit! So being with a few friends, the practical decision was to hire a van. Not the same experience as the Mustang so if you don't have much luggage - go for it! I still imagined I was Dale Earnhardt driving winding roads that lead us into Sonoma Wine Country. Take your time because you're greeted by an awe-inspiring landscape. The region boasts lush vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see, framed by the backdrop of the Sonoma Mountains. The hills are adorned with neat rows of grapevines, creating a postcard-perfect scenery that invites visitors to unwind and savour the tranquillity.
There are accommodation options for all, ranging from 2 - 6 star, from intimate B&Bs to luxury chateaus. And then there is the wine ... Sonoma County is renowned for its diverse array of wineries, each offering a unique tasting experience. From the historic estates to boutique family-owned vineyards, the options are as varied as the wines themselves. Spend your days wandering through renowned wineries like Kendall-Jackson or Jordan Vineyard & Winery, where you can indulge in tastings of world-class Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Cabernet Sauvignons. Engage with passionate winemakers who are eager to share the stories behind each bottle, enhancing the flavours with history and tradition. A personal favourite with an Italian taste and twist was Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery.
The culinary scene in Sonoma is a harmonious dance between locally sourced ingredients and world-class chefs. Healdsburg, with its quaint plaza and upscale boutiques, is a favourite among visitors seeking a blend of sophistication and small-town charm. Sebastopol, known for its artistic community, offers a bohemian atmosphere and eclectic shops. Each town has its own personality, inviting exploration and ensuring that your Sonoma journey is a rich tapestry of diverse experiences. Have your USD, or Travel money card ready and some spare room in those suitcases! Remember to check your airline luggage allowance and the alcohol limits. Yes, you can bring more, just be prepared to pay the duty like we had to.
Need a break from the shopping, food and wine? (Really, are you sure?) Well if you do, Sonoma Wine Country provides ample opportunities for outdoor adventures. Hike through the ancient redwood groves in Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve or enjoy a scenic hot air balloon ride over the vineyards at sunrise. The Russian River offers kayaking and canoeing opportunities, and the Sonoma Coast provides breathtaking views and rugged trails for seaside hikes.
