Bhutan - A True Hidden Gem

Bhutan - A True Hidden Gem

Have you ever experienced something so incredible that words couldn't do it justice? That's exactly how I felt during my recent visit to Bhutan.

For years, Bhutan was on my travel bucket list, but I always thought it would be too difficult to get there. It turns out, that was just a misconception.

You can fly directly from Singapore or Bangkok to Bhutan, but I chose to go through Nepal, with a few stops along the way. The flight from Kathmandu to Paro provides the most spectacular view of the Himalayan mountains, including the awe-inspiring Mt. Everest. The flight path to Paro airport is known to be one of the most challenging in the world, weaving through mountain ranges so closely it felt like you could reach out and touch them.

From the moment I arrived in Bhutan, I felt an overwhelming sense of calm. The people are friendly, welcoming, and serene. There’s no rush, no traffic lights, no loud noises—everyone is just courteous and respectful. It’s easy to see why this country is called the “Happiest Nation on Earth.” Despite the growth in tourism, Bhutan retains its mystical charm, but with many new luxury hotels and sanctuaries popping up to invite travellers who are looking for something different and unique without mass tourism.

During my stay, I visited several amazing resorts: Amankora Lodges in Thimphu, Six Senses Thimphu, Como in Punakha and Paro, Pemako in Punakha, Dhensa Resort in Punakha, and the Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary, which was my favourite. Le Meridien in Thimphu and Paro were also exceptional. Each resort offered incredible wellness experiences, organic food, and stunning mountain and river views—perfect places to disconnect, relax, rejuvenate and recharge.

Exploring Bhutan requires a bit of resilience, as the winding mountain roads can be challenging. The altitude changes are significant, ranging from 97m at the lowest point to 7441m at the highest mountain. Most of the time, I was staying within the 2000m range. While in Bhutan, you have to explore on foot to get to monasteries and temples that are located on ledges. Hiking to spots like the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery is not for the faint of heart. This hike starts at 2,600m and ascends to 3,200m, a 6.4km round trip that takes 5-7 hours. A word of warning—the 800 steps are quite the challenge. But it is worth the effort.

PRO TIP:
Book a hot bath at a farmhouse after the hike; your body will thank you.

After everything I experienced and the wonderful people I met, Bhutan has genuinely won my heart. I intend to return whenever I need a full recharge. Bhutan soothes the mind, body, and soul, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to discover its magic for yourself. If I can assist, please reach out
