Myths and Legends of Rhodes. Another side to the famous Greek Islands

No matter what you may have heard of the Island of Rhodes, be prepared for the history to exceed your expectations.

The Knights Templar have always fascinated me and so it was with great expectations that we sailed into an incredibly monumental harbour. The walled city of the old town is still imposing as it exudes memories of war and men of valour.

It may or may not interest you to know that the Friday the 13th myth seems to have its origins with the Knights Templar. Friday the 13th of October 1307 signalled the beginning of their end. A deal was struck with France not to fight wars and to not take up arms against Muslims or Christians as they were ordered to disband. The Grand Master and hundreds of Templars were burned to death in 1314, ending their order – hence the name Dooms Day on the 13th.

Having this knowledge allows you to see Rhodes in a different light. When you visit the Palace of the Grand Master you will uncover much of the past that has been preserved under thousands of years of dirt and rubble. The reconstruction of ancient mosaic floors and well-preserved rugs allows your mind to wander back in time.

Stop on the Street of the Templars and just try to imagine it with hordes of men in armour and chain mail laughing as they visit the local taverns. Once you have explored the Castle, I highly recommend the wall walk where you can put it all into perspective, and maybe even pick up a fragment of ancient pottery – you just never know how old it might be!

End your day in one of the welcoming cafés or taverns as you people watch the afternoon away. The coffee is ok, but the food is wonderfully Greek – as you would expect.
