There are moments in life when you realise how special travel can be, and this Mekong River cruise with my Dad was one of those. If you're looking for an experience that blends cultural immersion with unparalleled luxury, I can assure you that the Mekong Serenity cruise is designed for the discerning traveller seeking both adventure and comfort.
From the moment we stepped aboard, we were greeted with the refined elegance of the newest and most luxurious ship to sail the Mekong. The intimate experience, with only 44 suites, made it feel as if we had our very own floating sanctuary. Our suite was more than just a room—it was a retreat. Floor-to-ceiling windows invited breathtaking views of the river, and both an indoor panoramic and private outdoor balcony allowed us to soak in the sights, rain or shine.
Our days were a delightful balance of relaxation and discovery. The onboard spa became a frequent indulgence, where my Dad and I enjoyed soothing massages and on more active days, we dipped into the serene pool that offered sweeping views of the Mekong. And after a day of exploration, nothing could top dining at the Indochine restaurant, where we savoured a six-course Southeast Asian degustation with its exquisite flavours.
However, the true essence of this journey was found in the immersive cultural experiences. In Cambodia, we explored Angkor Ban, a village untouched by the horrors of the Khmer Rouge, where ancient traditions still thrive. Walking among traditional wooden homes, we felt transported to a different time, witnessing a way of life that has endured through centuries. Oknha Tey, a village known for its intricate silk weaving, offered a glimpse into the craftsmanship of local artisans. We watched in awe as women created stunning fabrics on wooden looms, their artistry a testament to generations of skill.
Each destination along the Mekong felt like a personal invitation to step into the heart of Southeast Asia. In Phnom Penh, we had the freedom to choose our adventures. We had a sombre day visiting the chilling Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Others opted for a more relaxed exploration of the Royal Palace and the vibrant streets on a cyclo ride. The ability to tailor each day to interests ensured that every moment felt deeply personal.
One of the most profound moments of the trip was receiving a Buddhist blessing from monks in Oudong, a sacred experience that left both my Dad and me with a sense of peace and gratitude. This was a reminder that travel, especially with loved ones, can be deeply transformative.
Crossing into Vietnam, we found ourselves enchanted by the riverside town of Tan Chau. We hopped onto rickshaws and meandered through narrow lanes, greeted by friendly locals who smiled and waved as we passed by. Later, we explored Evergreen Island, where time seemed to stand still amidst the simplicity of rural Mekong life.
Our cruise continued through Sa Dec, where we stepped into the world of French writer Marguerite Duras. Her home, immortalised in her novel "The Lover," was a window into a poignant love story set against the backdrop of colonial Vietnam. The architecture and history whispered tales of a bygone era, and it felt like we were living in the pages of her book.
Each evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, we returned to the Mekong Serenity, where our luxury cocoon awaited. Whether it was enjoying a cocktail by the Horizon Pool Bar or reflecting on the day's adventures, we knew we were experiencing something truly extraordinary.
The culmination of our journey in Ho Chi Minh City offered a final taste of freedom. Whether it was embarking on a motorbike tour through the city’s vibrant streets or indulging in a cooking class, the choice was ours.
For those aged 60+ looking to explore Vietnam and Cambodia in style, this journey aboard the Mekong Serenity is an invitation to rediscover the world—one where luxury, adventure, and deep cultural connections merge seamlessly. My Dad and I left with not only memories but a profound appreciation for the history, beauty, and tranquillity of Southeast Asia.
