A Journey Through the Heart of Australia on the Legendary Ghan

A Journey Through the Heart of Australia on the Legendary Ghan

My Journey Aboard The Ghan

My adventure began on a crisp August evening as I boarded The Ghan, one of Australia’s most iconic train journeys. As the lead guest, I was warmly welcomed aboard by our attentive Hospitality Attendant, who guided me through the Gold Service Twin Cabin Sole Occupancy that would be my home for the next two days.

Gold Service Twin Cabin Sole Occupancy

The Gold Service Twin Cabin Sole Occupancy is a premium accommodation choice on The Ghan, designed for ultimate comfort and privacy. This cabin provides a luxurious, private space with a blend of classic elegance and modern amenities.

Inside the Cabin:  Gold service twin cabin sole occupancy, on the Ghan train.

  • Sleeping Arrangements: The cabin features a spacious single bed designed for restful sleep. During the day, the bed is converted into a comfortable sofa, allowing for relaxation during waking hours.
  • En Suite Bathroom: A private en suite bathroom is equipped with a shower, toilet, and vanity. It provides all the essentials for freshening up throughout the journey.
  • Modern Amenities: The cabin includes climate control, a power outlet for charging devices, and ample storage space for personal belongings. There is also a fold-down table and a small writing desk.
  • Window Views: Large windows offer panoramic views of the ever-changing landscapes as the train travels through Australia’s diverse terrain.

Departure Evening & Dinner onboard The Ghan

As The Ghan left Alice Springs Station at 6pm, the excitement of the journey ahead was palpable. The train’s departure marked the beginning of an extraordinary experience through Australia’s outback. The friendly staff ensured I was settled comfortably, and I soon found myself in the lounge carriage, mingling with fellow travellers and soaking in the unique atmosphere. Dinner was a highlight of the evening. I enjoyed a regionally inspired meal, expertly paired with fine Australian wines. The dining experience was a true reflection of the quality and care Journey Beyond puts into every aspect of this journey. The all-inclusive dining and choice of Australian wines, beers, base spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages meant that every meal and drink was catered to perfection.

The next morning, as we continued our journey from Alice Springs to Darwin, the landscape transformed before my eyes. The arid expanses of the outback gave way to rocky gorges and lush greenery, highlighting the diverse beauty of Australia’s terrain.

Off the Rail Experience

One of the standout experiences was our visit to Nitmiluk Gorge in Katherine. This natural wonder offered breathtaking views and a sense of tranquillity that perfectly complemented the adventure of the journey. The Off Train Experience allowed me to explore the stunning gorge, taking in the awe-inspiring scenery and learning about the local Indigenous culture.

After our exhilarating visit to Nitmiluk Gorge, we were treated to a delightful lunch that highlighted fresh, local ingredients. The meal was a perfect complement to the morning’s adventure, with each dish reflecting the rich flavours of the Northern Territory. Dining while enjoying the panoramic views of the landscape made the experience even more memorable.

Arrival in Darwin

As The Ghan approached Darwin Berrimah Rail Terminal, I prepared for the end of this remarkable journey. Arriving in Darwin at 7:45pm, I was impressed by the seamless transition from train to city. A complimentary shuttle transfer was available to selected Darwin hotels, making the final leg of the journey effortless. My transfer left at 7:50, and by 8:50, I was comfortably settled into my chosen hotel in the Darwin city centre.

Who Should Take This Trip? And why is The Ghan ideal for travellers looking for an immersive, luxury adventure through Australia’s outback?
