A Day on Safari: What to Expect

A Day on Safari: What to Expect

Not too sure how your days on safari will unfold?  Here is a quick overview of a typical day on safari.

Early Morning

An early wake-up is necessary for an early start. As you get ready for your safari, your guide will wake you up between 5-6 am with a hot cup of tea or coffee and pastries. You will start your game drive before the sun rises.  This is a perfect time to see the wildlife start their day, your iconic predators will still be on the move from hunting the night before.  The lighting is also perfect and ideal for photography.

As the sunrises, you will stop somewhere scenic for a cup of coffee and a rusk; or you might be surprised with a bush breakfast.

Mid-Morning to Afternoon

If you don’t stop for a bush breakfast, then head back to camp for a delicious brunch.

The rest of the day until 3pm will be at leisure.  It’s the perfect time to relax around the main area. If it is warm enough to have a swim, most lodges will have a swimming pool.  Or simply sit back and watch the wildlife wander through camp.

Some lodges offer walking safaris – I would highly recommend doing at least one walking safari with your guide, it’s the perfect way to learn about the flora and fauna, and spot the smaller creatures.

Late Afternoon to Evening

Gather with the guides and other guests in the main area for high tea at 3 o'clock before departing on your afternoon safari. Once more, when the sun sets, the air becomes cooler, the animals move, and they congregate around the waterholes. Your guide will surprise you with a stop for the sunset; you'll have some delectable snacks, with a gin and tonic, while watching the sunset.

After it gets dark, your guide will turn on a lamp and make his way back to camp while spotting nocturnal animals for you.

Returning to camp, gather around the campfires, share stories with your fellow travellers and enjoy a delicious dinner.
